Just like the last sentence of this scene, Hazel, who has disconnected herself from the cannula that is keeping her alive, starts replying to Lidewij where she dies in mid sentence and can’t finish the letter.
For example, Augustus and Hazel went to Amsterdam in order to find Peter Van Houten, the author for “An Imperial Affliction” and ask him to answer their quetions of the untold ending of the story, due to the fact that the story ends with Anna, the main character of the book, dying while writing in her diary without finishing her last sentence. Hazel’s favorite book is behind most of the main events that happen in the plot. It might have seemed that the scene isn’t finished, that it is left incomplete, but this invented scene that was not included in the novel reflects the ending of Hazel’s favorite book, “An Imperial Affliction”. For as long as I live I will always love him and remember him for the He made me change perspectives about life, the world, what was right or wrong. How can I ever repay you? Everytime I reread those letters I just picture Augustus voice after every word, phrase, imagining him in his hospital bed writing the letter with his awful calligraphy. You don’t know how much gratitude I have for you. So I decided to write back to Peter Van Houten, hoping Lidewij gets hold of the letter and see how much gratitude I have for her sending me those mails. I just wanted to be the closest I could to Augustus. Every second I could feel my lungs drowning more and more, bursting from the amount of liquid they contained, but I didn’t care. Just like we used to do it back when he was alive. Just him and I, no tubes or meds that could remind us our temporary existence in the world. I disconnected myself from the cannula, giving my lungs some time to breathe on their own, wanting to go away in the far universe where he and I escaped at night when talking to each other. Though he died several weeks ago, I can still hear his voice enunciating the words with the charismatic and ironical tone he has, well…had.
Scene that didn’t appear in the novel (it continues the letter she read that Augustus sent to Peter Van Houten):Īfter reading the letter, my heart stopped.
